Paradigm Ascension

The Second Prestige Layer - Remnants: Post-Collapse Idle Survival

What is Paradigm Ascension?

"Echo Reset was always MERIDIAN's design. Ascension is when you take the pen."

Paradigm Ascension is the second prestige layer in REMNANTS, sitting one level above Echo Reset. Where an Echo Reset returns a single run to Year Zero, ascending resets the entire prestige cycle - your Echo Fragments, every Echo Forge purchase, your Run Traits, Specialists, Blueprints, Faction alliances, and the run counter itself.

In exchange you earn Paradigms - MERIDIAN's design language, turned to your own ends. Paradigms power two things: a lifetime Ascension Level passive that finally breaks the Echo bonus ceiling, and The Lattice, a five-branch skill tree that rewrites the rules of every future cycle.

The short version: Echo Reset accelerates one run. Paradigm Ascension accelerates every future Echo Reset. It's a slower, deeper loop wrapped around the one you already know.

Unlock & Cadence

Don't rush the first one. The Paradigm reward scales with how deep your cycle went. Ascending the instant run 15 ticks over leaves most of your potential Paradigms on the table - see Earning Paradigms below.

Why give all that up? The Lattice rebuilds it faster than you lost it. Genesis hands you a head start, Echo Mastery multiplies fragment gain, Automation hands you bulk-buy and autobuy from second one - by your second or third post-ascension Echo Reset you're moving faster than the cycle you sacrificed.

Earning Paradigms

Paradigms are awarded on ascension from how much your cycle accomplished, on a deliberately sublinear curve so a single monster cycle can't hand you the whole tree:

A typical first ascension at run 15 lands around the entry ring of the tree (~17 Paradigms) - enough to commit to one or two branches, not to light up the constellation.

The Defiance capstone pays you back: MERIDIAN's Heir (def4) grants +25% Paradigms earned on every future ascension, on top of its passive boost. Once you can reach it, it compounds every cycle after.

Ascension Level (the Passive)

Your Ascension Level is your lifetime Paradigm total. It never decreases, and it grants:

Because it scales with lifetime Paradigms rather than spendable ones, spending Paradigms in The Lattice does not lower your passive - you keep the full Ascension Level forever.

The Lattice

Spendable Paradigms buy into The Lattice - a five-branch constellation of 20 nodes radiating from a central root. Each branch is a linear chain: you must own the shallower node before the deeper one unlocks. Costs climb with depth (a full clear runs ~197 Paradigms).

✶ Genesis - Run-Start Acceleration

Depth 1 · 2P
Remembered Foundations
Begin every run at Level 2 (Survivor's Camp) with 500 scrap, 50 food, 50 water already gathered.
Depth 2 · 4P
Inherited Crew
+5 Scrap Pickers, +3 Foragers, +2 Rain Collectors standing ready at every run start.
Depth 3 · 8P
Accelerated Awakening
The Echo Run milestone ladder unlocks 2 runs early - Forge, Reclamation Engine, signals and all.
Depth 4 · 15P
Founder's Memory
Begin every run at Level 3 (Fortified Outpost), with all starting resources ×5.

⬡ Industry - Raw Output & the Building Economy

Depth 1 · 3P
Foundry Doctrine
All building costs −10%.
Depth 2 · 6P
Retrofit Doctrine
Unlocks the Paradigm Retrofit upgrade ladders (see below).
Depth 3 · 12P
Mass Production
Every shelter holds twice the population (capacity ×2).
Depth 4 · 20P
Thousand-City Schema
Building cost growth drops from ×1.15 to ×1.14 per copy - huge at high counts.
Depth 5 · 28P
Iterative Convergence
Per-copy cost growth no longer holds flat - it decays toward a ~1.10 floor as a building line deepens. Stacking a single structure into the hundreds finally becomes affordable: go wide, not just tall.

◈ Echo Mastery - The Fragment Economy

Depth 1 · 3P
Resonant Memory
Echo Fragment gain ×1.5 at every reset.
Depth 2 · 6P
Fragment Synthesis
Fragments past the production cap convert at 50% efficiency instead of 15%.
Depth 3 · 12P
Unbound Resonance
Removes the Echo production cap entirely - beyond the old ceiling, growth continues on a soft square-root curve forever.
Depth 4 · 18P
Eternal Echo
Echo Fragment gain ×2, stacking with Resonant Memory for ×3 total.

⟳ Automation - Quality of Life as Power

Depth 1 · 2P
Batch Fabrication
Adds the gold bulk-buy button to every building - buys straight to the next Retrofit milestone in one click (falls back to ×100).
Depth 2 · 5P
The Long Quiet
Offline progress accumulates for up to 72 hours instead of 24.
Depth 3 · 9P
Autonomic Industry
Auto-buy is available from the first second of every run - no Archive research required.
Depth 4 · 16P
Self-Directing Colony
Scavenge run cooldown −50%.

✦ Defiance - Turning the Design Against It

Depth 1 · 4P
Design Awareness
All raid damage −20%.
Depth 2 · 8P
Protocol Override
Echo Signals appear twice as often.
Depth 3 · 14P
The Architect's Hand
All Reckoning (city-founding) requirements −25%.
Depth 4 · 30P
MERIDIAN's Heir
Ascension Level passive rises +20% → +30%/level, and every ascension grants +25% more Paradigms.

Paradigm Retrofit Ladders

Buying Retrofit Doctrine (Industry depth 2) unlocks new upgrade tiers across your production buildings - the Paradigm Retrofit ladders. These behave like ordinary building upgrades but gate behind deep ownership counts, rewarding you for stacking a single line:

Go wide: paired with Iterative Convergence (Industry depth 5), which decays cost growth as a line deepens, these milestones make pushing one building into the hundreds a real strategy - a maxed old building line rivals jumping to the next tier. The gold bulk-buy button buys straight to the next milestone. This is the heart of the late-game "numbers go up" curve.

Why Founding Gets Harder

Ascension rewards are powerful enough that, left unchecked, they'd trivialise city founding in the new cycle. To keep the climb meaningful, the shelter / city-founding gates self-balance:

First-Ascension Strategy

  1. Push the cycle before you ascend. Because Paradigms scale with cycle fragments and runs, a few extra deep Echo Resets past run 15 are worth far more than ascending the moment it unlocks.
  2. Open with Automation + Genesis. Batch Fabrication (×100 buy) and Remembered Foundations / Inherited Crew are cheap and immediately compress every future early game.
  3. Then commit to Echo Mastery. Resonant Memory → Fragment Synthesis → Unbound Resonance turns each post-ascension cycle into a fragment engine, which feeds your next ascension.
  4. Bank toward Defiance depth 4. MERIDIAN's Heir (+30%/level passive and +25% Paradigms) is the long-term compounding payoff - the single most valuable node once you can afford its 30-Paradigm cost.
The meta-loop: ascend → spend Paradigms to make Echo Resets faster → run deeper cycles → earn more Paradigms next ascension. Each pass through the loop is dramatically faster than the last. This is the true endgame of REMNANTS.
